Grove Lane

The second GLC flat I was given, at 93B Grove Lane, was due to a transfer on grounds of harassment from a particular neighbour at 20 Stourbridge House. Grove was nice - the best in its day - with two bedrooms, plus free electricity paid for by the GLC, or Southwark Council as the GLC was coming to an end. I thought the extra bedroom would do for Michael but he never joined me. He had his own life by now.

Grove Lane, with its free electricity, really opened the door to lodgers. Many came and went, and it allowed me to have some money for motoring expenses. Most of the lodgers were men. Women and girls never seemed to fit in, so I always took men really, more and more so because I found working men more reliable. For most, the rent was round about £40 a week, with a £40 deposit, but there was always room for compromise if, say, a girl promised to help with Windowns, answering the phone, or doing housekeeping.
